WELCOME TO vMic - ORALHISTOLOGY“Oral histology and embryology” is the first internet histology course for students of dentistry based on virtual slides. All the tooth related tissues and substances are now available for microscopical inspection online. There is no longer need to purchase expensive microscopic equipment. Over a wide range of magnification (1.25 – 40 x) all slides can be inspected on a PC-monitor.Udo M. Spornitz, PhD Institute of Anatomy, University of Basel , took advantage of the superb program vMic (by Katharina Glatz MD and Dieter Glatz PhD) to introduce this web-based microscopy course. With this virtual histology course every student is now able to study the virtual slides 24 hours a day, all year around, thus a new dimension of microscopy has been introduced to the study of teeth and tooth-related tissues. The menu and the navigation are written in English. The related pdf.files, are, for the time being, only available in German. It is planned, however, to add an English version by the end of 2004. During the winter term of 2003/2004 this course has been established and has been carried out in the Computer Lab of the Universitätsrechenzentrum (URZ). Thus the «old fashioned microscopy» course has successfully been replaced by a virtual histology course. Slide acquisition was done by Dieter Glatz with a robot-microscope which scans the slide and captures a matrix of images. For this a 40x Zeiss Apochromat with NA=0.95 has been used in order to obtain high quality images. The images were postprocessed and then served by a plain http-server. The viewer - called vMic - has been developed with Macromedia Flash.
